8 Fun and Festive DIY Christmas Signs for the Holiday Season

Sharing is caring!

Charming & Cheerful DIY Christmas Signs for 2023

There is something so special about creating your own Christmas decorations, don’t you think? Maybe it’s the cheery Christmas music playing in the background or just the fun, festive spirit.

Either way, I’m sharing some DIY Christmas sign ideas so you can make some DIY projects with me and get in the Christmas mood too!

Easy DIY Christmas Chalkboard with Chalk Pens

I found these small, red-frame chalkboards at Target a while back for $3 a piece, and decided to grab a few because I knew I would find a way to use them for Christmas.

Not long after that, Chalkola Arts contacted me and offered to send 2 packets of their chalk pens for me to try. It was perfect timing–now I had a plan for my Target chalkboards!

Products used in this post were provided free of charge by Chalkola Arts. All opinions of the product remain my own.  This post contains links to sites outside LostandFoundDecor.com.  Links are provided for your convenience. You don’t pay any more by shopping through these links, but it does help support this blog. Thank you!

I love scrolling through Pinterest and looking at all the amazing chalkboard art out there.

But the few times that I’ve tried to draw my own cute chalkboard art . . . Well, it hasn’t gone so well.

Honestly, hand-lettering is not a natural talent of mine and trying to draw intricate letters with actual pieces of dusty chalk only makes it worse!

So I was excited to give the Chalkola chalk pens a go!

These little guys promised to give me just about the same look as chalk but without all the messiness and difficulty.

The descriptions say they work on any non-porous surface, including glass, metal, dry-erase, and chalkboards.

NOTE: A surface painted with chalkboard paint is not recommended, as sometimes it’s still slightly porous and the ink can soak into the surface, leaving a stain.

I was sent 2 sets:  One pack of 10 Chalk Pens along with 6 Chalk Metallic Markers, and a set of 8 Earth Toned Chalk Markers. I decided to try out a few from each set.

About Chalk Pens

  • The first time you use the chalk pens, it takes a minute or so to prep the pen and get the ink to flow, kinda like a paint pen.
  • The metallic chalk markers are a bit different–they feel much more like a traditional marker.
  • The instructions were easy to follow, and within just a few minutes, I had my design and all the pens ready to go!

Instructions for Christmas Line Art Chalkboard Design

In just a few easy steps, you’ll be able to create a cute Christmas sign in no time at all!

  1. The first thing to do is to draw a line with the silver marker, with a few loops in the line.
  2. Draw small rectangles along the line for the base of each light bulb.
  3. Color bulbs in various colors all along your silver string – use any color of your choice to pair perfectly with your other Christmas crafts!
  4. Write in your message to share the holiday cheer.

To get the effect I wanted, I used the silver chalk marker to draw my light string and various colors of chalk pens to draw in different colors for the Christmas lights.

TIP: If you’re layering any colors on top of each other, you want to be sure and let each color dry completely (which just takes a few minutes) before adding a new color on top–just so you don’t mix the colors or get another color on your marker tips.

Removing Chalk Pen Ink

  1. The directions say you can erase the pens easily, like regular chalk. So, I tested that out!
  2. I started by just wiping with water. The paint wiped right off, but you could still see the outline where the color had been.
  3. So I tried then some glass cleaner, and it worked like a charm! The chalkboard was as good as new and ready to use for my next DIY projects.

From start to finish, the whole project took less than 10 minutes 🙂

I love how it turned out! A quick, fun little project–and the Chalkola pens made it so easy!
